DEFINING THEORIES IN COUPLE THERAPY

Course Description: This course will focus on an integrative approach to marital/couple therapy. We will analyze the major models of couple therapy. We will review each model’s philosophy on distress, the treatment approach, specific strategies and techniques, typical obstacles and limitations and common clinical issues in working with couples. This course not only covers the current models of couple therapy, but offers many practical tools for the practitioner. 

We will review some of the emerging conceptual and technical trends in the field of couple therapy, as well as consider issues of gender, culture and sexual orientation.

Special issues such as marital violence, substance abuse, extramarital affairs, the multicultural couple, and couples facing illness will be discussed. We will look at the treatment of many common diagnosable adult disorders and the credibility of couple therapy interventions in dealing with these disorders.

This comprehensive course covers:

  • Specific strategies and techniques of the current models of couple therapy.
  • Typical obstacles and common clinical concerns.
  • Practical tools for working with a multitude of couple issues.

Approved by the Georgia Composite Board for MFT Course required for licensure. 45 hours - semester course/ 15 hours CEU credits for related disciplines.

Course Requirements: Participants must attend 80% of classes and receive 80% or better on graded assignments and exams.
